In a film review, James Berardinelli writes, “At other times, the action depicted is chaotic and difficult to piece together, often because the person doing the filming is running or unsure what to capture. It is phenomenal how this film accomplishes this without any sources of special effects. This film easily grasps the audience’s attention and with each passing scene, slowly rises the suspense. The film uses no songs to build suspense or initiate a fear response within the audience, but frankly, it doesnt have to. It surely captures the realness of this world with its illusion of spontaneity and realistic dialogue and acting. This film is especially clever with its usage of a tight budget and making do with what they had available. Despite traveling south, the somehow find that they had gone in a circle, as though some malevolent being trapped them in a loop. Things become even more suspenseful when the team find themselves lost in the woods.

Branches woven together in strange arrangements hang from the trees - something that one of the characters can only describe as “voodoo stuff”. They stumble across seven rock formations (presumably symbolism for the seven children supposedly killed by the witch). They are followed throughout by ominous signs as well. Out in the forest, the three are haunted at night by various sounds banging, footsteps, children laughing and screaming as well as the call for help from one of the group members when they inevitably go missing. A film captured by the cameras of this film crew, it is easy to forget that this film was actually directed and scripted, not some mysterious, spontaneous tapes left found after the three documentarians disappeared. The only other release that really came close to it was Phineas and Ferb: A Very Perry Christmas, while there are about a dozen or so other releases worth picking up on this week's list. The Blair Witch Project, directed and written by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez, is an independent horror film following three protagonists who go out to a small town and hike through the the forest while filming a documentary based upon an old legend about a witch in the woods. With so much competition, one might think it would be tough picking the Pick of the Week, but that was not the case, as Beauty and the Beast - Blu-ray / DVD Combo walked away with that distinction. One of the busiest weeks on the DVD / Blu-ray release report in fact, I set a record for most reviews in a single week. There's actually only supposed to be one code as a prize and one is supposed to be going to me, but I already own the move on Blu-ray, so I thought I would give away both codes as prizes. The prizes this week are codes for a UV digital HD download for The Blair Witch Project. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Big Hero 6.

Because of this, Big Hero 6 is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. I think Interstellar will be the bigger film however, it is opening on IMAX on Wednesday and I'm not sure if the studio will lump those figures into the weekend numbers and that's an added complication I don't want to deal with. Next weekend, Interstellar and Big Hero 6 open wide. The winners of our Be the Hero contest were determined and they are.
